Netflix has seen its fair share of ups and downs regarding the streaming wars still ongoing in American households. With the news that Disney+ has brought in more subscribers recently to its streaming platform, Netflix has been dethroned as the top tier of streaming providers. Disney’s great fortune is primarily due to its partnerships with Hulu, the Star Wars franchise, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For Netflix, the streamer has had to make do with its own brand of original content, and in 2021, it looked to its global audience to help further its reach by adopting new subscribers. One series, in particular, Squid Gamesbecame a hit for Netflix, and its upcoming season 2 may introduce fans to a whole new set of deadly games.

Sony has today added 12 new games to PlayStation Plus for subscribers to play across PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles. At the start of this month, PS Plus Essential members were able to begin downloading August’s three new titles which included Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, Yakuza: Like a Dragonand Little Nightmares. And while this lineup at a baseline level was quite strong for the month, those who are subscribed to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium can now look to get their hands on an even larger number of games.

As of this moment, the 12 new games in question coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium have become available to download. This slate is notably headline by three installments in the Yakuza series from Sega and stands as the beginning of the franchise’s full addition to PS Plus before the end of 2023.

Netflix is going all-in on video game development with the establishment of an internal studio in Helsinki, the streaming giant said Monday. It will make original games with no ads and no in-app purchases, Netflix said.

“This is another step in our vision to build a world-class games studio that will bring a variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games … to our hundreds of millions of members around the world,” Amir Rahimi, vice president of Game Studios at Netflix, said in a press release.

Leading the studio is former Zynga executive Marko Lastikka. Zynga is primarily a mobile developer known for making games such as FarmVille, Words with Friends, CSR Racing and other casual titles.

Sony has announced a committed expansion into mobile gaming by establishing the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division and acquiring the untested Savage Game Studios to develop “a AAA mobile live service action game”.

The new division will develop “innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP that meets PlayStation Studios’ high-quality standards” and will operate independently from console game development.
